DBIA Honors Peter W. Tunnicliffe with Lifetime Achievement Award

October 24, 2016

The Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award is DBIA’s Highest Honor

Washington, D.C. – The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) – the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build – has announced Peter W. Tunnicliffe, P.E., BCEE, DBIA, CIRM, as the 2016 recipient of the DBIA Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award.

Peter Tunnicliffe has been passionately promoting the value and use of the design-build delivery method for 25 years. In 1992, he was the visionary who convinced CDM Smith to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary with its primary mission being design-build delivery. This was a monumental change in the course of the firm’s history at a time when design-build was in its infancy in many parts of the country.

Mr. Tunnicliffe grew CDM Engineering & Constructors into a $400-million operation with service offerings to private, public and federal clients. His strategic direction advanced the firm to one of the top 400 general contractors in the US and one of the top 10 design-build firms in the water/wastewater industry. He has been the Project Director or Executive Sponsor for hundreds of design-build projects valued from $1 million to $250 million.

Mr. Tunnicliffe is currently President of CDM Smith International, leading engineering and design-build services worldwide. He has become a major proponent of progressive design-build and he continues his active advocacy for DBIA best practices.

The Brunelleschi Award – named for Filippo Brunelleschi, the 15th century Florentine master builder who built the Duomo of the Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence – is the highest honor DBIA bestows on an individual. Brunelleschi Award winners have made significant contributions to the design and construction industry through outstanding leadership and the advancement of integrated design-build project delivery.

“With this award Mr. Tunnicliffe now joins a select group of industry leaders who have led the way on design-build. He and his fellow Brunelleschi winners have exhibited originality, vision and breadth over the course of their professional lives,” says Lisa Washington, CAE, DBIA’s Executive Director/CEO. “I’m proud to have worked with Peter and look forward to DBIA’s continued collaboration with this giant in the industry.

The award will be presented to him at a celebration and dinner on November 3, 2016 held during the 2016 Design-Build Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. Press interested in covering any part of the conference should contact Louis J. Jenny (ljenny@dbia.org) for a press pass.
